It took a while for the Yanks back home to realize that the European intellectuals were right,
2Which they realized all of a sudden,
3oOn the day the stock market crashed,
4pAnd smashed the Yank economy into a bunch of broken little pieces,
5Not to mention the European economy,
6Which was even worse,
7If that was possible.
8qWhen the gloom of the Great Depression settled over America,
9rA lot of the expatriates came back home,
10sBecause the Yanks were a lot easier to take without all that naive optimism,
11tAnd besides, it was a cinch that the depression would nail the coffin lid shut on Prohibition,
12Because if a Yank can’t have any money,
13uYou can be sure he’s not going to stand for being thirsty too.
