WAYS Chapter 29

The Way of the Yanks
Chapter 29
The way of the Yanks was pure Hollywood,
A factory of dreams.
The studio was vast and rich,
Its people filled with ardor,
And wishes they knew could come true.
They produced for the millions,
Each dream to its kind,
As befits the American Way:
Some were mega-blockbusters,
With galaxies of stars,
Bright Technicolor locations,
And writers by the score;
Others were small and disarming,
Or black and white and intense;
Yet more were funny and charming,
Or thoughtful tries at making sense;
Some were playful fantasies,
A romp in the heart of a child,
While more than a few were tragedies,
With choruses that moaned and wailed.
Not all of them succeeded,
For the critics had their day,
And sometimes theaters hawked their seats,
To throngs who stayed away.
But the factory kept rolling,
And learned the most painful part,
That one man’s vision won’t suffice,
When you’re making collaborative art.
There was one immense production,
A romance of civil war,
Which nearly broke the spirit,
Of those who ran the store:
The stars were frightened,
By a cast of thousands;
The producer fired directors,
By the dozens;
The writers quarreled,
And some of them quit;
And the crews were ensnarled,
In nearsighted snits.
But when it came time to shoot the nag,
And put an end to it,
They swallowed down their ire,
And clamped down on the bit,
Because they had to make a movie:
And that’s all there was to it.
So they came together,
And made a giant hit,
Out of cannons and canons,
And freedom and grit.
