WAYS Chapter 19

The Way of the Beaks
Chapter 19
The way of the fBeaks is a summer,
Of heat that scorches the fields,
And beliefs that harrow the hearts of men,
As they labor to master the plough.
But their lands have survived,
In the gpitiless sun,
hUnwatered by rain through the ages.
And the icrops they have nourished,
jWith monsoons of blood,
Have the power to keep them alive,
Still burning with visions of ancient gods,
Who demand and ennoble and dream.
kAnd while other men turn away from the past,
Or bury it in tombs,
They use it as a chain to lead,
Their lpeoples through the mstorm.
nThe dunes may change,
oThe sands do blow,
And desert monuments are scrubbed to pblanks.
But the qtribes have weathered it,
All of it,
Conquered it,
And move in the shadowless sand,
Toward oases that promise to end their thirst,
And bring paradise back to their rland.
