Chapter 20
The Romans got very good at thinking up new ways to make the Decline and Fall funnier.
2mFor example, they appropriated a new religion called Christianity,
3nWhich started in a poor Roman province,
4oWhen a Roman crucified the pmessiah,
5Whose name was qJesus,
6And who believed in rLove Thy Neighbor and so forth,
7Which was a pretty dangerous idea in Rome,
8Since it isn’t always seasy to love thy neighbor,
9aEspecially when you own all thy neighbors,
10bAnd have killed a lot of their friends and relatives,
11And are pretty sure they don’t love you either.
12But to pull off a good cDecline and Fall,
13You have to take some dchances.
14eSo the Romans decided that they were Christians too,
15Which made it easier to justify not fighting the barbarians,
16fWho were sacking Rome every time they thought no one was looking,
17gProving they’d learned a lot from the Romans already.
