Chapter 3
Now I have become an old man,
And my memory can’t be trusted,
cOr why would my sons have put me here,
And stopped visiting me,
And stopped caring about me,
At all?
It must be that the way I remember things is all wrong,
Because I was never smart enough to hate America,
Or even the human race,
Because most of what I thought I knew about the human race I learned in America,
From Americans,
dExcept for the war,
eWhere I learned something about Japs,
Who I hated,
Because they were the enemy,
Although later on I kind of stopped hating them,
Because I knew some other Japs,
In America,
Which these other Japs loved too,
In spite of everything,
Just like me.
