In a way, it’s like coming back at something you’ve seen a million times,
2Only from a completely different direction,
3Which makes it all look different,
4Completely,
5Because I’m an old man now,
6cAnd I’ve gotten older than Lincoln ever had a chance to get,
7And so I know those eyes of his aren’t about being older,
8Which maybe I used to think when I was a kid,
9Because my eyes aren’t like that—
10In spite of all the trouble and pain I’ve ever experienced,
11And all the things I’ve ever worried about,
12And all the ideas and causes I’ve ever believed in,
13My eyes don’t see what Lincoln’s saw,
14And I just can’t ever get to the end of who he must have been,
15Which makes me feel better somehow.
