Things stop going so well
Chapter 33
But then the oAmericans entered the war, and things stopped going quite so well.
pThe Russians got stubborn about Stalingrad,
qAnd the Brits got lucky in North Africa,
And the British and American bombers started taking Kraut cities apart,
rDay and night,
sAnd then there was D-Day,
tWhen it turned out that a nation of two hundred million people could produce more weapons and ships and soldiers than a nation of eighty million people,
uAnd the long, slow retreat began,
With bodies coming home to Germany from the eastern front in Russia,
And the western front in France,
And the southern front in Italy,
vWhere the worthless, cowardly Wops had caved in like a bunch of sniveling Jews,
Which is only a figure of speech, of course,
And shouldn’t be taken the wrong way,
But will be, of course,
wBecause no one can give Germany a break,
Ever.
