THE BOOK OF
KRAUTS
OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE BOOK OF GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG
An accident named HitlerThings stop going so well
Chapter 31
Of course, it’s easy for people to point fingers after the fact and say the Krauts should have read Hitler’s book and seen what he had in mind,
2mOr that they should have voted him out when the Nazi brownshirts started beating up Jews and things like that,
3nOr maybe they should have rebelled after Krystallnacht, when all the osynagogues got burned down,
4pOr maybe there should have been a coup d’état when Hitler started grabbing up all those little countries in eastern Europe,
5qOr maybe there should have been a popular uprising when all the non-Aryans started getting sent to concentration camps,
6But the thing is, things happen a little bit at a time,
7rAnd you don’t always notice the things that are important right away,
8And besides, the western Europeans and the Americans have always had pretty convenient memories,
9sSince none of them objected that strongly to the business with the Jews till much much later,
10And it was never exactly a secret,
11Except from the German people, of course,
12And if you want to be completely honest,
13tJust who is it that’s so fond of the Jews anyway?
14Besides, what did the Allies do when they saw that Hitler was rearming Germany,
15uOr when he annexed Austria,
16vAnd Czechoslovakia?
17Mostly, their response to all these things was to hope that Hitler would just go away eventually,
18Which is exactly what the German people were hoping the whole time too,
19Except maybe for a little while at the beginning,
20aWhen all the trains were running on time,
21bAnd the war was going so well,
22And is that really so awful?
