OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE BOOK OF GLORY

Frog intellectuals invent despairThe Maginot Line disappears
Chapter 35
Meanwhile, a new generation of Frog sintellectuals was making profound discoveries based on the perverse hypothesis that maybe tlife wasn’t about glory at all,
2But something else instead,
3uNamely despair,
4Which is the feeling you get waiting for the end of the world when you know that it’s all just a vbad dream anyway.
5wUsing this new xlogic, From thinkers like ySartre and Camus invented existentialism,
6zWhich is a philosophy based on the idea that if France can’t have a glorious existence, then existence itself must be a meaningless random accident.
7aaThis philosophy was terribly inspiring to a lot of bbforeigners as well, who were hanging around in France waiting for the end of the world after ccWorld War I,
8ddAnd writing a bunch of books about it,
9eeAnd painting a lot of pictures of it,
10And developing a lot of political theories about it,
11ffIncluding a theory that the Russians must be right about communism being the way to go,
12aSince if everything’s meaningless anyway, you might as well have a roof over your head and someone else to do the thinking for you.
