All in all, civilization was a very big thing with the Chinks.
2Since they’d invented it in the first place, they had very strict ideas about what was civilized and what wasn’t.
3For example, it wasn’t civilized for young people to pick their own mates,
4And so their parents usually did it for them,
5Whether the young people thought it was a civilized custom or not.
6Fortunately, it all tended to work out,
7aBecause parents almost always thought it was civilized to pick their children’s mates,
8Since they didn’t get to pick theirs,
9bAnd why should some youngster be so lucky?
10cThe Chinks also thought it wasn’t civilized to have beards,
11Which worked out pretty well because Chinks can’t grow beards,
12dUnless you count those little disgusting wisps of hair that some of the uncivilized ones have.
